Environmental Education Centre

Virunga is home to the critically endangered mountain gorilla, along with other rare and endangered wildlife. There is currently little environmental education within the vast 8,500 km2 Virunga National Park. However, at Park HQ, Rumangabo, a small building is now destined to be the future Environmental Education Centre for the Park. Funds raised at the auction will pay the salary of a teacher, their training and for basic, interactive displays and materials for children to use at the Centre.

As part of a new environmental education programme being rolled out around Virunga, G4G delivered a pedal powered cinema to the Park in March 2012, generously funded by Animal Friends Insurance. Children at remote schools with no electricity, now have the chance to watch conservation films powered simply by a cyclist. The new Environmental Education Centre will soon give children the chance to explore the Park with a ranger, see the gorilla orphans at the Senkwekwe Centre and learn all about Virunga’s fabulous wildlife.

Fishing In Cardiff

Freshwater Fishing in Cardiff

If you are thinking of fishing in Cardiff then the one thing you will certainly have is variety.

Cardiff is situated on the Bristol Channel where 3 significant rivers terminate. Two of these flow into Cardiff Bay. This bay is fast becoming a secret treasure chest for fishermen and can only get better.

River fishing in Cardiff

The Taff flows through the center of Cardiff and its lower sections around Hamadryad Park contain some nice chub at about 6lbs and significantly Barbel can now be found here. The lower Taff around Hamadryad Park has produced chub to 6lbs and a few Barbel have started to appear. At the beginning of he year some superb Grayling were landed.

The other river that flows into the Bay, the Ely has some surprises, the lower reaches will provide some very healthy pike, earlier in the year, 11 pike have been caught the largest being 15lb. With plenty of prey in Cardiff Bay pike can do their own fishing in Cardiff and their numbers and size can only grow.

Fishing in Cardiff Bay

So what of Cardiff Bay, well when the bay was formed by the construction of a barrage a tidal mudflat became a huge freshwater lake. The bay took a while to balance itself out but over the past few years it has now started producing. What we now see when fishing in Cardiff bay is a really diverse fishing arena.

Rudd of superb quality have been caught up to two pounds and carp in double figure poundage are readily available and there is a record of 30lb being gently landed from the bay waters. 10,000 bream were added to the bay earlier in 2013 and current catches are around 2lb. Walking over the pontoons at the sailing clubs some big mullet can be seen in the shallows and with such an abundance of different fish it is not surprising to learn that a recent pike weighed in at 33lbs.

No fisherman like to be told what to do as we all have our secrets, but take care to check your gear as these are lively healthy fish that put up serious resistance !!

A map of permitted areas for fishing in Cardiff is shown here.

Carp Fishing in Cardiff

There are carp ponds dotted all over south wales, however, the warmer coastal climate inevitably means that they weigh a bit more making fishing in Cardiff a bit more exciting. We have already identified one area for Carp, that being Cardiff bay and if the surrounding area is considered they area also available at Pyscodlyn Mawr. There are also carp in Barry pods as described below and In the body of the city of Cardiff there are carp to be found in Roath Park Lake. Daily fishing in Cardiff permits are £4.60 and can be bought from the kiosk offering boat and pedalo hire.

There are two dedicated carp lakes to be found in Cardiff both producing excellent fish

Cefn Mably Lakes
6 mixed coarse fishing lakes and two carp fishing lakes. 8 lakes to choose from can’t be bad! One of the nice things about Cefn Mably is that it caters for beginners and families as well as serious expert anglers. Prime specimen mirror carp from Lodge Lake , and Spring Pond up to 28lbs would make any fishermans day!

Lodge Lake:-Day Ticket £11.00 Spring Pond:- Day Ticket £9.00

Lamby Lakes
Lamby lake is to be found on Lamby way and terrific larger carp fishing in Cardiff is to be found there. The fish are generally over 20lb and 30lb’ers are in there as well. The lake staff are really friendly and well informed.
Other fish inhabiting the same waters are perch, tench and golden rudd, and we all know what an attractive fish they are.

Fishing in Cardiff surrounding area

The surrounding area also provides some good opportunities, a short drive away on the river Trothy in Monmouthshire good catches of Dace and small Chub have been caught.

Not so far away is a small pond location called Pyscodlyn Mawr its tucked away a bit but offers Carp, Tench, Barbel, Pike, Chub, it suffered a bit with trees falling into it in the spring of 2013 but these have been removed and it is now back to its best.
GPS Coordinates 51.475704,-3.382237 Marked as B on the map.

Barry ponds
To be found in Cadoxton near Barry town. These ponds are on land owned by Dow corning. Both the ponds have Bream, Tench, Roach and Rudd. In addition in Carol's Pond there is an additional selection of Crucian Carp, small Common and mirror carp.

Sue's Lake
This lake has Pike and Eels to add variety and is an extension of an old pond so had an old stock of fish and does produce the occasional surprise.

During May Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officers have continued patrolling the river banks and responding to reports of out of season fishing. Two officers in Northumbria dealt with 26 close season and 11 licence offences in one day alone. Patrols across England also detected other offences, such as unlicensed fishing, unauthorised crayfish traps and prohibited baits.

Angling Trust angling newsIn the Southeast Region, Angling Trust volunteers are working in partnership with the Environment Agency on Operation CLAMP DOWN to identify hotspots where illegal fishing is regularly taking place. As the weather has warmed up, volunteers have provided intelligence on a number of locations where illegal fishing is taking place. These areas will be visited by future Environment Agency patrols. Further information on the Voluntary Bailiff Service, including how to sign up in the pilot Southeast Region, can be found on the Angling Trust’s website.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said, “We will maintain these patrols and respond to reports throughout the close season. Anyone tempted to break the rules should think again. They risk a court appearance and a fine of up to £50,000 if convicted. These patrols cover a large area and officers can cover several rivers during a day. A wide range of stillwater fisheries are open now for those that want to wet a line before the rivers open again on 16th June.”

“Anyone witnessing illegal fishing incidents in progress can report it directly to the Environment Agency hotline, 0800 80 70 60. Information on illegal fishing and environmental crime can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Fish Legal solicitors have exposed serious failings at the Environment Agency (EA) in responding to water pollution which kills wildlife. For many years Fish Legal members have complained of the Agency failing to respond to fish kill incidents effectively, including not completing full fish kill surveys to assess the numbers of dead fish or the impact on remaining fish populations. Fish Legal can now show from the EA’s own damning data just how bad the situation really is.

Angling Trust angling newsTFish Legal made a freedom of information request regarding the EA’s response over the past 6 years to pollutions which caused fish mortality. This was to find out the number of fish kill assessments done immediately after an incident; whether they responded within 24 hrs (or at all); and whether they surveyed the remaining affected species within 8 weeks after the incident (to assess recovery). The disclosure revealed a shocking lack of both mortality assessments and population surveys, as well as poor response times, and in some cases no fisheries response at all.  Out of the 17 fishery areas in England, the lowlights included:

• Just 134 immediate fish kill assessments completed by fisheries teams in 6 years out of 839 incidents killing fish: that’s just 16% of incidents being followed up with a proper assessment of dead wildlife once pollution occurs;

• Regional variation sees immediate fish kill reports in 61% of cases in Anglian Central, but in 0% of cases in 4 other regions: North and South Wessex, Cornwall and East Midlands.  In South Wessex fishery surveys were carried out within 8 weeks in 43% of cases, but in 6 other regions no cases at all were followed up with a survey of this type;

• Only 40 pollution incidents killing fish were followed up with a survey of the remaining fish population within 8 weeks, out of 839 incidents over 6 years: a mere 5% of total cases!

In England & Wales 1.3 million freshwater anglers contribute about £22 million a year in licence fees to fund the EA’s delivery of its statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop fisheries.  These figures indicate that it is failing in its statutory duty to licence-payers.

Fish Legal has met with and written to the EA’s Head of Fisheries for answers and will be closely scrutinising what changes are brought forward to improve matters.  It is clear that poor decisions are being made by Environment Management teams, who decide not to involve fisheries teams when responding to incidents.

Fish Legal has also discovered that the EA does not always follow its own Operational Instructions for responding to water pollution.  There remains a fundamental concern over the Agency’s ability to gather effectively the evidence needed to make polluters pay for the damage they cause to fisheries, and to assess the state of the water environment.

William Rundle, Head Solicitor at Fish Legal, said: “We have been surprised by what appears in the Agency data and I have met with the Environment Agency Head of Fisheries to discuss these problems.  We have had an open and candid conversation about this and he has promised to look into the situation himself and bring forward improvements.  I understand an audit of “Environment Management” performance has already been set up.  It goes without saying that this situation cannot continue, as it appears that even the minimum standard of service required by the Agency is not being met.”

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “Fish kill surveys are important for criminal prosecutions generally but also for Fish Legal when it takes civil legal action against polluters on behalf of its members.  Without a proper survey, the courts do not have all the information they need to impose tough fines, and polluters use this to argue there has been less damage to fisheries when faced with paying compensation to affected angling clubs.  This means that polluters get away without proper punishment and the objective of deterring offenders is not fully achieved.  It is quite frankly ridiculous that the EA does not carry out full surveys after each and every incident which involves fish going ‘belly up’ in our nation’s precious streams, rivers and lakes.”

CC Moore's Active Feast Method Mix review

CC Moore products are created under the ethos "Quality without compromise". Their products are well known and well respected amongst anglers worldwide and their tried and tested baits not only represent outstanding value for money, they also contain high quality ingredients sourced from reputable suppliers who guarantee their purity, freshness and traceability. Uk Fisherman decided to put one of their products to the test ... their Active Feast Method Mix.

Product Description:

Active Feast is one of the most naturally attractive method mixes on the market and is not only irresistible to carp. As the mix breaks apart it releases powerful soluble feeding triggers to all layers of the water stimulating carp into a indulgent feeding frenzy. With fish recognising natural food items on the bottom, in mid water and on the surface, they are pulled down onto the baited area where the remaining feed and hookbait is situated.

Review:

First off I have to say that we spend more time glued to our computers here at UK Fisherman than we do actually fishing ... sad but true! So when we do venture out from the gloom of the UK Fisherman office we like to be armed with baits that will definitely give us the edge. CC Moore's Active Feast Method Mix certainly gave us that.

Even before I tore open the bag in excitement you can see that this is a quality product, packed with quality ingredients including a large percentage of freeze dried insects and bugs (including water flies, snails, shrimps, daphnia, insect eggs and other 'naturals'). Once opened, the smell also tells you that this is a quality, fish attracting product. The mix even comes in a resealable bag which is a plus in itself.

As for the mixing to the required consistency, it was simple and effortless to create a mix to suit your exact needs whether your using an open-ended feeder, cage feeder, method feeder or stick. Their claim that "as the mix breaks apart it releases powerful soluble feeding triggers to all layers of the water" is certainly true. We tested it in a bucket and could see that whilst some particles remainned suspended in the water, others fell to the bottom, creating fish attractors at all levels.

To conclude, we found the the Active Feast Method Mix from CC Moore an excellent product, easy to use and at a reasonable price. The following reviewers seemed to agree:

Active Feast is simply one of those products that I no longer leave home without. Its naturally outstanding make - up just oozes confidence as soon as t he seal on the bag is opened. T he combined natural food items found within the mix enable you to present a lingering haze of attraction around your choice of hookbait.
Ollie Pearce

It really is something special and something that will be a major edge in my fishing and possibly yours too.
Spencer Wright

It's certainly no news to you all that the weather has been a nightmare and we all now feel like we have had enough of constant rain to the point we all have webbed feet, or so it would seem. The swims here have endured the wet weather very well though we cant say the same for the banks and the fields behind the swims, that remain very water logged and in desperate need of some warm, windy weather to dry them out. But considering the record breaking amounts of rainfall so far this year we are emerging relatively unscathed unlike some of the lakes further north that find them selves in some terrible situations with rivers flooding around them and the risk of losing fish. So our hearts go out to them and we pray for a good outcome.

Etang De BrigueuilEnough about the weather, this month has been an exceptional one for us. Despite the spawning being disrupted and the bad weather the fish have continued to feed and the results have been record breaking. The first week we were joined by Kees and his son Jarno up on swim 8 and with a mixture of Pro Line Pineapple or Garlic and Robin Red they landed some lovely fish to achieve new PB's with a 52lb mirror on their 4th day. Also a 51lb for Joeri on swim 10 to top off his session with his Dad including 2 40's to 45lb again on Pineapple. Everyone was fishing between 60 and 80m out on either chod or combi rigs mainly.

Another PB for Simon and Russell fishing on swim 8 the following week when Simon had a 42lb and a 48lb and Russell his first grass carp at 34lb. The Verberne family in the chalet also had 3 40's to 44lb.

Then came Jaap! If you follow us on Facebook you will have seen already the daily posts detailing his progress through the week. But for those of you who don't we were very pleased to see Japp back again for the 5th year running, this year on swim 10. He has managed to set a new PB here each year except for last year so we were crossing our fingers for a good week for him, We needn't have bothered because he smashed it. His first 40lb came on the second night, his 7th fish of the session, and a nice 2-tone fish she was to. The following night his18th run produced a whopping 54lb 2oz mirror and a new PB. He continued to haul fish having several runs each day some double and triple runs, beating his PB for a common too with a stunning fish at 35lb 10oz on Friday. He went on to finish his week with 49 fish from 51 runs, a new record for one person (and he didn't fish for 3 nights as the rain was so bad)a total weight of 1460lb average weight 29lb 13oz, 19 x 30's, 3 x 40's and the 54lb. Pressure is on now for next year!

And last week we welcomed back the Bakker group on swims 7 and 8 and Barry and Charlie on swim 11. The weather last week consisted of torrential rain every day till Wednesday when the sun did finally come out for a while. It didn't dampen their spirits though so well done for their tenacity. They were rewarded though by some superb fish. Charlie had 2 carp at 46lb, and 12 x 30's between him and his dad Barry amongst the 30 fish they landed. And the Bakker's had 47 fish from nearly 60 runs between the 3 of them including 18 x 30's, 3 x 40's and 3 x 50's to 59lb so an incredible week for them. The chalet swim was very quiet but Mario's first fish was a 52lb mirror on a Cell boilie at 40m then having lost 3 runs he landed a beautiful 35lb mirror on one of our Banana crème boilies.

So a good month despite the rain. It has played havoc with the spawning of course so we are unsure as to how many have or haven't spawned as yet but that has affected us moving the fish under 25lb out. This has, of course, been put on hold until they are less stressed but we will continue to move them once it all settles down a bit.

We would like to take the opportunity to welcome our newest member of the team, Simon Stuart, who has joined us as the new bailiff. He will be with us a couple of days a week and being a carp fisherman himself for many years he has a wealth of knowledge to go with his boundless energy and motivation. He is also adding his input and helping us to expand the shop with a bigger range of bait and tackle. The shop is now located in the conservatory along with a large drinks fridge from which you can buy soft drinks, beer, chocolate etc all for sensible prices of course. We will also be stocking English snacks and nibbles for those attacks of the munchies. French biscuits just don't cut it!

We have also been giving the outside a real facelift going crazy with the strimmer and the lawn mower now the rain has stopped. New signs are going up too so when you arrive you will see our logo, green on black, on a large sign hanging from the lamppost in front of the house. Also new reception sign, toilet and parking signs all in green on black. So along with new pots of flowers and the old boat outside the mill has been filled with earth and planted up everywhere it is really looking pretty.

You can now follow us too on www.carpforum.co.uk under foreign venues so we would welcome any photos, comments etc that you would like to make on our thread.

As you can see lots of exciting positive stuff going on, with catch reports like these our first 60 is not far off, so which one of you lucky lads or lasses is going to catch it?

Till next time, take care

Andy and Tracey Jones

Following a week of better weather and increasing temperatures, both Temple and the Old Lake saw anglers reporting some hefty catches over recent days with both lakes seeing the fish switch back on and start to feed more intensely as water temperatures started to nudge back up.

Bury Hill Fisheries fishery reportFishing close to the islands and margins seem to be where the majority of the fish are getting caught from, although the Old Lake also saw plenty of fish taken from the open water. With natural foods also increasing as water temperatures rise, the winning method at present on both lakes is to fish good quality boilies tipped with a small bit of pink over a bed of bait.

All the lakes are looking good for the coming bank holiday weekend and with temperatures set to increase a little further over the next few days, expect to see some good catches reported.

Lee Norman had a great 72hr session last week when he fished peg 12 fishing up the channel and tight to island landing 4 fish on Cell and Icelandic Red. Catching mirrors weighing 21lb 8oz and 21lb 10oz and a 21lb 40z common, the highlight of Lee’s session was a stunning new PB in the shape of a 33lb 12oz common.

Last weekend saw some great sport for two Temple regulars Dave Hopkins and Kevin Nash with both anglers reporting multi bags. Fishing swim 11, Dave Hopkins fished 18mm Cell boilies tipped with yellow corn tight to the island over a few loose baits catching a brace of mirrors weighing 32lb 4oz and 25lb 10oz as well as a 23lb 7oz common.

Dave’s brother in law Kevin Nash fished next door in swim 12 and soon after casting out Kevin was quickly into a lively 23lb 11oz mirror carp which was followed by a 26lb 2oz PB common and a brace of mirrors weighing 25lb 1oz, 27lb 4oz. See pictures below. All of Kevin’s carp were caught fishing tight to the island margins using a snowman boilie presentation.

Aaron Smith also had a 30, a mirror of 32 lb 7 oz, along with other fish of 28 lb and 21 lb. All took 18 mm and 15 mm Cell combinations with yellow corn cast tight to lilies and reeds over a handful of freebies at peg 9. Another angler to catch was Terry Wood, from Sutton, who had a 26 lb mirror from peg 7 on 10 mm and 15 mm CC Moore Live System boilies fished as a snowman.

The Old Lake carp are also firmly in a feeding mood, as Gary Nichols found out when he landed 30 fish including a common of 27 lb. Gary, from Leatherhead, started at peg 15 and later moved to peg 2, catching fish of between 12 lb and 19 lb in addition to the big common, all on half a Mainline Cell boilie over a scattering of Cell freebies.

Another great catch from the Old Lake was Si Watters cracking boat caught 29lb common from the jungle. Fishing with his buddy Dan Roberts, Si caught the stunning big 29lb common when the pair shared a boat for the day. Fishing the top end of the jungle, the big common fell to a balanced Cell boilie with Cell pop up combination, which was presented on a ledger rig. In all the pair landed 5 fish in total, which included three upper doubles.

Old Lake regular Mark Potterton, from Westcott, landed seven carp of between 15 lb and 20 lb, the biggest a 23 lb common. Mark was fishing the far margins from peg 2 using SAE Bait Developments B1 boilies tipped with Scuds, and he loose fed a kilo of freebies.

Frank Davison, from Guildford, landed six carp to 22 lb 8 oz float fishing meat from peg 49 whilst Frank Wenman, from Godalming, caught five carp, the biggest a common of 23 lb, along with bream and tench. He fished peg 35 and cast tight to the island with Cell baits tipped with Banoffee pop-ups.

In the past two months the Angling Trust's Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) has gathered momentum. It started as a small pilot project in the South East of England, but it is now growing very rapidly and chalking up a number of successes in the battle against poaching and other illegal activity on the banks. A very wide range of people have volunteered their time to work alongside paid Environment Agency staff.

Angling Trust angling newsDiscussions are now underway with the Environment Agency about rolling out the VBS to the rest of the country. Any members interested in applying to become a Volunteer Bailiff should in the first instance email their full name, date of birth, address and contact numbers to bailiffs@anglingtrust.net. Your details will then be added to our database - we'll be in touch immediately recruiting starts in your area.

We are now investigating how sea anglers can become involved with the VBS to gather intelligence about illegal netting. The Environment Agency is working with the Angling Trust to train volunteers in pollution reporting and monitoring flood defences. The VBS is not just about poaching - it's about making the most of the role that we anglers play as the eyes and ears of the bank & beach.

Our Fisheries Enforcement Manager, Dilip Sarkar MBE, is working closely with the police. Dilip sits on the national Poaching Priority Group, along with other organisations like the Wildlife Crime Unit. The Angling Trust is also represented on the Defra backed, Poaching & Wildlife Partnership, and the SE-based Poaching & Fishery Crime Group - the latter working with the Metropolitan Police on Project Ghillie, a crack-down on crime and anti-social behaviour on London's waterways.

It is absolutely crucial that all anglers report incidents and information concerning poaching to the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60. Fish theft is a criminal offence and must be reported to the police. The importance of reporting incidents and information cannot be over emphasised - the system will only work if we anglers provide the necessary information.  Ask the Environment Agency to keep you informed about progress following your report.  If you don't hear back from them, please let us know.

For further information about the 'VBS', or any other matters related to fishery enforcement, please contact dilip.sarkar@anglingtrust.net.
