Korda BYCAC Eliminator One

It’s been an exciting and entertaining first day of the BYCAC with some good angling and cracking carp landed by the junior carpers. The day started bright and clear and it looked like it might be a tough days fishing but just after the draw had been made the clouds moved in and the wind picked up from the south west, excellent fishing conditions. Previous winner Robert Sutton got off to a cracking start with a couple of nice carp but also lost a number of good carp, which could have proved costly. Around the corner from him Aaron Savin also found a shoal of carp in front of him and was catching steadily. By lunchtime more than eight of the anglers had caught and so there would be no need for any cast offs today. Early afternoon saw Robert Sutton land two good twenties whilst Aaron Savin was still picking fish off steadily although of a smaller stamp. Although these boys looked like they were slogging it out for first place behind the battle was hotting up between Ben Warboys, Tyler Jay Smith, Joel Palmer and Ben Parker for third spot and it would go right down to the final hooter. Conditions continued to remain overcast throughout which meant some 16 out of the 33 competitors caught, with zig rigs again proving effective and a very good effort by all the anglers fishing. The first day of the event was over and the final results as follows:-

12 Aug
Day 2 of the BYCAC dawns and the young carpers are keenly awaiting for the gates to open to Brasenose 1, the wind has changed direction and very light, with heavy cloud cover. Will the carp be as responsive as the previous day. As expected the start was slow with little action in the first hour, then the first carp is landed by Brad Day in peg 14 but unfortunately it is foul hooked and doesn’t count. He wastes no time though in recasting and in the next half hour takes three fish to go into an early lead. On the opposite side of the lake Jake Taylor is fishing well and managing a view fish, although he is losing a few fish the same as Brad. The rest of the lake is pretty quiet upto lunchtime with only one or two fish out but a lot more being lost in the weed. By early afternoon the clouds are clearing and the warm sun is making things very hot, surely the carp will come out to play on the Zigs. The story of the day though seems to be lost chances with Brad Day securing first place with a total of five fish and 58lb 9oz but losing more than double this. Jake Taylor catches a few more fish to finish with four carp and Jordan Morrison finishes third and included the biggest fish of the day, an 18lb plus mirror. Eighth and the final qualifying place went to Liam Bean with 10ib 5oz, with a total of 19 fish caught and 11 anglers catching. A tough day but all the lads fished well, what will day 3 bring……….

Day 3

Its Wednesday and the third of the qualifiers commences, conditions looks very similar to those of Monday overcast and a good south-westerly wind but will the carp respond in the same way after 2 days pressure. Only time will tell. The first fish is hooked an hour into the contest in peg 17 but is unfortunately lost, but shortly after one of the favourites for the day, Ryan Boyda in peg 36 is into a fish. It looks a good fish and the Sky TV cameras are quickly into the swim to record the action and eventually a cracking mirror of 22.04 is in the net and gives Ryan a cracking start. Around the lake it seems everyone is struggling and only an odd fish is landed, except in peg 36. Whilst everyone else struggles Ryan Boyda makes it look easy with fish after fish falling to his Zig rigs throughout the day and by the close he has amassed some 10 carp and a winning weight of 144lb 9oz. In second place was Dan Salway in peg 27 who fished well for two carp and included the best carp of the competition to date a superb 24lb 1oz mirror. By the closing whistle only seven of the anglers had caught and so it would be the dreaded cast off (the penalty shoot out equivalent) for the remainder of the competitors to decide the final place to go through to the prestigious final.

Day 4

Well it’s Thursday and the last day of the qualifiers, it’s a full house but after the tough conditions of the last 2 days what will be in store for the competitors. Like the previous couple of days the first carp wasn’t landed until well into the morning but proved to be a very nice mirror of 23lb 2oz from peg 29. Although it proved to be a slow day for all the competitors it did seem to be that the bigger carp were coming out to play, with the first 6 carp on the bank half of them turned out to be twenties. As the afternoon progressed the sun came out once again but the carp seemed to head straight for the top bay. A few more carp were landed around 4 o’clock but it still only meant 7 competitors had caught would the cast off come into play for the second day running. Then with only 15 minutes left the call came over the radio that peg 24 was into a carp, everyone was holding their breath until the carp was landed and Crowy let out a cheer, there would not be a cast off. The final result meant that Matt Ilsley fishing out of peg 23 had landed 4 carp for 54lb 15oz and had taken first place. No more qualifiers left, it is down to the 48 hour final and for the 32 finalists to find out who will be crowned 2009 champion, good luck to them all.
