The Angling Trust are pleased to announce the Ladies World Coarse Championship team for 2011 representing England in the World Angling Games in Firenze, Italy from 27th August – 4th September 2011.
The England Team Managers have named an unchanged squad to the team that brought home the silver medal last year in South Africa. The England Ladies Team for 2011 are; Helen Dagnall, Julie Abbott, Samantha Sim, Emma Pickering, Samantha Perkins, and Wendy Locker and David Brooks (Manager).
The England team are strong contenders for bringing home the gold medal this year with their mix of experience and youth. Unfortunately the England Ladies team have not got a sponsor this year and it has to be recognised that this team representing England are having to self fund their way into the Championships. The team will be carrying out fundraising activities and raffle tickets are also being distributed in order to help raise additional funds to assist the team.
The competition will take place on the river Arno just upstream of Florence and is close to the venue that the ladies fished in the previous World Angling Games held in Italy in 2000. The main species will be chub, bleak carrassio, catfish and the odd big carp.
This year will see all angling disciplines compete in various locations in Italy over the same week in the World Angling Games.
Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager stated
“The World Angling Games is the competition that CIPS hopes will escalate angling into the top sports to be recognised by governments worldwide. It brings together more than 50 nations fishing in many different disciplines in both salt and freshwater.”
“England need to be represented through the Angling Trust in as many competitions as possible and in freshwater we will see eight teams in the coarse fishing section, of which this Ladies team is just one. Unfortunately along with the Veterans and the Anglers with Disabilities team the Ladies have no sponsor this year and will have to find almost £2,000 each to compete.”
“I am personally asking for public support by asking you to buy, or indeed apply for and sell raffle tickets to enable them and the other teams to take part. All the money received from the sale of tickets will go towards the teams expenses.”
Tickets will be on sale from various tackle shops and individuals during the next couple of months and anyone who would be interested to sell any to assist the International teams, whether they are individuals, Tackle shops or Fisheries can apply by contacting Sandra Drew, Competitions & Events Manager at Angling Trust on 0115 9061 301 or email; sandra.drew@anglingtrust.net

England won the Home International Youth Fly-fishing Championship held at Grafham Water on Wednesday..
It was a breezy day which made conditions very demanding for all 56 competitors who fished from boats drifting 'loch-style' in the waves (anchoring is not allowed) but a lot of hard practice over the past three months paid off for England on the 1,500 acre Cambridgeshire reservoir. All of the 14 England team members caught fish, with John MacIntosh from Lancashire taking the individual champion trophy as well.
This follows England's victory in Wales last year. England's youth squad are hard to beat on their home waters having won 4 out of 5 Internationals fished in England over the past 18 years.
At the presentation dinner Team Captain, Matthew Kidd from Plymouth, praised the dedication of the whole team and the tremendous support from team manager Rob Edmunds and coach Phil Longstaffe over the past year. A team of six will fly out to Slovakia for the World Youth Rivers Championships next week.
The England Youth Flyfishing Association, which manages the team and this year’s international expects to become part of the Angling Trust's competition and performance structure later this year.

Following the recently-held youth trails, the Joint Youth International Team Managers of the U18s & U22s, Steve Sanders and Mark Downes are pleased to announce the teams who will be representing Angling Trust this year. The two trials were a huge success with the young anglers bagging between 12lb and 35lb in each of the trials. Both trials were 2.5hrs long and bloodworm and joker were the predominant baits.
This year, the teams travel to Italy along the Canal Bianco near Mantova on 18th July, with the Youth World Championships two match days being 24th/25th July. The canal is 50m wide with skimmer, bream and carrassio being the main species. Mark Downes, International Team Manager, said “In theory the venues should suit the teams so we are hopeful of getting amongst the medals this year.”
Last year on the river Sorraia, St Justa, Portugal the U18s fished in extreme conditions of 38C heat to finish outside the medal position in 5th place with the U22s just behind in 6th place at Couruche, Portugal. The two Youth teams are hoping to go one better this year to be in with a chance of bringing home some medals as they have in previous years.

England Team Manager Joe Roberts has arranged for two separate trials to take place to identify anglers of international calibre who are experienced in fishing with bloodworm and joker. Both trials will be fished to FIPSed international rules, and fishing to 11 ½ metre limit on pole for roach and skimmers. Fishing will take place from 11.00am-3.00pm for both trials.
The trials will take place at Packington Somers Fisheries, Somers Road, Meriden. CV7 7PL. The first trial will be held for Anglers with Disabilities on Saturday 22nd May. The trial for the Veterans is for anyone who is 60 and over at the date of the trial on Sunday 23rd May.

The application forms for the U18s and U22s England Youth Trial nominations are now available for download from the Angling Trust website, and must be completed in full and returned to the Angling Trust in Nottingham, no later than 20th March 2010. The 2010 Sensas Team England U18s and Drennan Team England U22s will compete at the World Youth Championships in Italy.
This year the first trial for the England Youth Coarse Angling Trials will be held on Saturday 10th April at Gold Valley Lakes.
These trials will be pole only and bloodworm and joker will be the predominant baits. Baits will be available to order in advance and can be collected at the trial.
Mark Downes, England Youth Team Manager stated "This year’s Youth Championships will be in Italy on a large canal that looks as if it will be full of skimmer bream. It will almost certainly be a pole and bloodworm event and I feel it will be a good one for us.
There will be an initial U18s trial at Gold Valley Lakes, and then the U22s will be put through their paces at Packington Fisheries in the Midlands."

The Angling Trust’s Anglers with Disabilities England Team took part in the 11th Freshwater World Championships at Ponte De Sor, Portugal on 8th-9th August 2009. The Sor River at Ponte De Sor is clear water and slow stream with the main fish specimens present being Barbel, Bogas, Carps and Bleaks.
The World Champion squad consisted of anglers who had earlier in the year taken part in selection matches that were fished to international rules to help identify anglers who are of international calibre. Fishing at international level is completely different to the way anglers normally fish in this country, and the selection matches gave the anglers the opportunity to prove their skills to deliver success at Ponte De Sor. The squad selected to take part in the World Championships consisted of; Stefan Gent, Mark Eves, Alan Chadbone, Andy Lakey, Terry Naulls, and England Manager, Joe Roberts.
Joe Roberts, England Manager stated “On day one the top three teams all fished for bleak with weights up to 3kg. England started for bleak, but started slipping behind the leading teams after 1 ½ hours, so changed their method to waggler and long pole feeding Hemp seed, the team managed to pull it back finishing the first day in 5th place.
On day two the team started for bleak but only for 20 minutes, then changed onto another method for waggler and long pole, going ahead and winning day two with 9 points. The team gelled really well together and I was a little concerned on day one, but the team managed to pull it back on day two and take the bronze medal position and win 3rd place overall. I would like to thank Drennan for donating tackle to the team and offer our appreciation for their support.”

The Angling Trust is giving anglers over the age of 60 the opportunity to fish for England, with the first 2009 trial for the England Veterans team taking place on Furzton Lake in Milton Keynes on Wednesday 11th March
This will be the first of a series of trials in which England Team Manager Joe Roberts will ask all attendees to fish the match to international rules to help identify anglers who are of international calibre. The match will give anglers a unique opportunity to fish on this year’s F.I.P.S.ed organised World Championship venue using the same tactics that will be needed on 11th and 12th July later this year.
England selectors will be looking for anglers who have an excellent knowledge of bloodworm and joker techniques demonstrating their ability to fish at international level. Anglers will also need to adapt their domestic style of fishing considerably following F.I.P.S.ed rules where only float fishing with a pole up to 11.5m or waggler are permitted.
Any angler who believes s/he has the aptitude to enhance England’s standing in international fishing further and contribute to another gold medal summer should contact England Manager Joe Roberts directly on 07860 469 595 or 01604 712 897.
Any potential anglers who would like to fish the trials need to be 60 years of age on or before the 31st December 2008 and join the Angling Trust to be eligible to fish, which can be easily done via the new website, www.anglingtrust.net or by calling 0844 7700616.
Joe Roberts, England Team Manager, is expectant of a good year for 2009, commenting: “Last year we had an incredibly successful World Championship in Portugal winning team bronze and individual gold with Mark Addy. This year the eyes of the world will be upon us, especially as we are fishing on home water. The anglers that come to trial will need to be at the very top of their profession, as nothing short of gold will be expected.”
International Events Manager Dick Clegg supported Joe, adding: “There will be huge pressure on this year’s Angling Trust England Veterans team due to the venue. However, the team will be able to take nothing for granted as the skills required to fish to international rules are completely different to domestic angling techniques. This makes the series of trials that will be conducted by Joe, become even more important ensuring selected anglers have the abilities required to bring success on our home waters.”
Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd commented: “we want the best team possible to ensure that the England veterans can continue their winning streak, and so I would encourage all eligible anglers to register with Joe as soon as possible. As the old saying goes: time spent fishing is time added onto life.”

This year’s competition will be incredibly close following the successes of our female athletes at the Beijing Olympics; however angling has been just as successful and needs anglers to stand up and be counted. The Sunday Times has launched their 2008 Sportswoman of the Year competition, and angling needs you to support our own female superstar, 2008 World Champion Emma Pickering.
Female star, Emma Pickering from Doncaster, brought home her own gold medal with an epic display at the World Ladies Angling Championships in Hungary last August, fishing for the Subfish Team England Ladies.
