Dates announced for two new Fisheries Enforcement Workshops in Kent and Surrey
The Angling Trust is working closely with the Environment Agency, National Wildlife Crime Unit and Institute of Fisheries Management to deliver Fisheries Enforcement Workshops in all eight of our regions. Booking is now open for two new Workshops in Kent and Surrey. Book now to learn about fishery enforcement law, the intelligence-led enforcement system and angling enforcement best practice.
The intention to to increase awareness throughout the angling community regarding the law, intelligence-led enforcement system and best practice. Delivery is by experienced enforcement professionals and also include sessions on migrant anglers and general best practice for water bailiffs.
These one-day courses are aimed at all anglers - not just fishery managers or controlling clubs - because we all need to understand the law and how the system works to protect fish and fisheries.
Angling Trust Ambassador Mick Brown attended the East of England Fisheries Enforcement Workshop and said: "This really opened my eyes, in all respects. It is easy to think that nothing is happening - but it is: there is a hard-core of very experienced and dedicated professionals working tirelessly behind the scenes to get everyone aboard and working together. I am so pleased that I attended, because I now feel much better informed and able to help. I really would urge as many anglers as possible to support the Fisheries Enforcement Campaign and attend these crucial briefings."

These Workshops are a partnership initiative between the Angling Trust (AT), Environment Agency (EA), Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM) and National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU). The intention is to brief angling club bailiffs – ‘Water Keepers’ in law – regarding the essential law, how fisheries enforcement works, general good practice and the bigger picture of Rural & Wildlife Crime. Delegates are advised to read the ‘Best Practice Guide for Angling Club Bailiffs’ (Available for download HERE) prior to attendance.

Angling Trust signs up over a hundred new members at this year’s CLA Game Fair
The Angling Trust signed up over a hundred new members at this year’s CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace during the weekend despite a smaller than usual fishing presence at the annual country sports and lifestyle event. The brand new stand with new displays and a range of activities at the revamped House of Fishing proved popular with visitors who were able to hear how the Angling Trust and Fish Legal is standing up for fishing and fighting the threats to our sport.
The Trust also issued a special Ambassador badge to some of the Angling Trust Ambassadors who were helping out at the Game Fair including Malcolm Greenhalgh, Carl & Alex Smith, Mark Everard, Chris Clark, Barney Wright, Phil Smith, Alex Jardine, Charles Jardine, Neville Fickling, John Bailey, Keith Elliott & Sarah Collins. The Trust also signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Get Hooked on Fishing at the show to recognise the two organisations’ close collaborative relationship promoting angling participation.
International photographer and flyfishing expert Matt Harris also signed up as the Trust's latest Ambassador and was on hand to give tips to visitors on catching big game fish on the fly.
Visitors to the Game Fair were able to:
- Watch expert lure fishing demos by England international's Gary and Sam Edmonds and have a go themselves in the special lure tank
- Have a go on Get Hooked on Fishing’s charity fish fighting machine and win a place on the leaderboard
- Learn about angling enforcement, the volunteer bailiff scheme, and tackling invasive species with CEFAS
- Try identifying the fish species in the EA’s impressive fish tank
- Get some great hints and tips for catching those ‘bucket list’ fish at the Angling Trust / Selectafly Pro Team Clinic
- Chat with Team England anglers and coaches and learn about the new Talent Pathway programme
- Meet representatives from the Wheelyboat Trust and Thames Water’s Angling Academy
- Put questions to Mark Lloyd and Martin Salter at the Open Forums in the House of Fishing ‘Talks Area’
- Learn to fish under the tuition of licensed coaches at the launch of National Fishing Month which saw more than 900 people given expert guidance in coarse and game angling, funded by Environment Agency rod licence revenue.

Paul Kozyra wins RiverFest qualifier on River Trent at Newark
Sunny conditions greeted the competitors who took part in the Angling Trust RiverFest qualifier on the River Trent at Newark on Saturday 19th July. The winner on the day and the first competitor from this qualifier to go through to the RiverFest final on 15th/16th November was Paul Kozyra from York, who weighed in 41 lbs of skimmers and bream up to 6 lbs.
In second place on the day and to qualify for the final for the second time was John Urruty (Alfreton Angling) with 26 lbs 8 oz. Final qualification place into the final was John Barningham (Lincoln Whisby) who finished ninth in the match to take the lead over England International angler, Sean Ashby by only 1 oz. John had 11 lbs 1 oz from peg 42 on the Newark Dyke.

Newent Community School Wins Schools National Championship at Daiwa Hallcroft Fishery
Newent Community School from Newent, Gloucestershire won the Angling Trust Schools National Championship at Daiwa Hallcroft Fishery, Retford on 16th July 2014 with 72 points. The team consisted of; Matt Anderson, George Organ, Tom Cleverley, Jack Cleverley and Harvey Shayle.
In silver medal position saw newcomers, Campsmount Academy from Barnsley take second place in the team category with 66 points. The team were; Dean Lambie, Jack Waugh, Joshua Butler, Oliver Kerry and Charlie Hemingbrough. In third place with 60 points were Minsthorpe Community College Red, they were; Daniel Bryan, Logan Jones, Jessica Reed, Jake McAllister-Birch and Ellyse Dixon.
Newent Community School were back in the medals with the top individual classification going to Matt Anderson with an outstanding weight of 17.040 kg from Bridge Outer C14. In second place from Outwood Academy Valley Purple was Ben Storey with another good weight recorded of 16.880 kg from Moat Outer A5. In third position was Mathew Forres-Donelly from Dinnington Comprehensive ‘A’ from Canal Pool E2 with 10.920 kg.
The Under 14s winner on the day was Dean Lambie from Campsmount Academy with 10.160 kg, and the Geoff Woodcock Memorial trophy presented to the highest placed girl in the competition was Jessica Reed with 3.920 kg from Minsthorpe Community College Red.
The 80 competitors fished in very difficult conditions with temperatures reaching 25 degrees with bright sunshine throughout the day, but despite this some very good catches were being recorded for a lot of the competitors and everyone enjoyed the event.
The Angling Trust would like to offer their thanks and appreciation to Stephen McCaveny and Daiwa for their continued support and generous sponsorship of prizes for the event. Daiwa also provided their Consultant, Sandra Scotthorne who awarded all the prizes to the competitors. Appreciation also goes to Julie Abbot, England Ladies Coarse Team who helped out on the day, and to Terry, Luke and Nick Sears and all the staff at Daiwa Hallcroft Fisheries for the use of their water and all their help on the day.

How to fly fish for Trout - beginners video guides to fishing
UK Fisherman are delighted to bring you a series of fly fishing videos courtesy of The Totally Awesome Fishing Show, designed to help anglers with a range of fly fishing techniques and tactics.
If like me, you quite fancy giving fly fishing for trout a go but think, then this video is for you.
This video does what it says in the title. Fly fishing for Trout can be rewarding as you have the pleasure of making that perfect cast turn into the perfect catch. Graeme Pullen gives the beginners a big boost with his essential, easy-to-follow casting tips. And with 40 years fly fishing experience, he freely admits he is not a "pretty" caster - but the man certainly knows how to catch trout.
In this video he takes the Totally Awesome Fishing film editor and son Mike Pullen on his first ever fly fishing trip - all genuine, and not faked for camera. Mike soon taps in to the Avington Rainbows, but even Graeme is amazed at how quickly his son gets among the trout - of course, it must be his excellent coaching!

Third Angling Trust RiverFest qualifier won by Shakespeare Superteam member
The third Angling Trust RiverFest qualifier, held on the River Severn at Lower Lode on Saturday 5th July saw Shakespeare Superteam member Paul Bick become the first angler to qualify for the final in successive seasons.
Paul easily won B section at Peg 33 with 15-5-0, made up of three decent bream, four skimmers and a few perch to groundbait feeder with maggot and worm hookbaits. Paul will now be hoping to go one better than his runner up spot in last year's final.
Joining Paul in the final will be Sensas Thyers sponsored match winner Roy Carter. Roy drew A section Peg 15 and amassed 27-7-0, a catch of four bream, eight perch and a surprise 8lb mirror carp, all were taken on worm baits and groundbait feeder. The final qualifier was another Shakespeare man, Steve Williams. Steve drew Peg 2 on the Haw Bridge section and with four hours of the match gone had not had a bite. He then made a decision to cast right across the river to the far bank and this brought him six skimmers weighing 8-13-0 in the final hour.

Carl Goulsbra had four fish up to 26lb using Mainline cell boilies fished at about 25-yards range. Lee Dodsworth had a 26.04 mirror using Carp Cuizine real meal boilies. Justin Borman had three fish recently using Mainline hybrid wafters fished over hemp and corn, the biggest two weighed 20.04 and 24.08. Fishing with him was Stuart Clark-Gandy who two fish up to 20lb 09oz using similar tactics. Dean Allaway had a number of fish using Carp Cuizine boilies, this included three twenties. And after a successful day on St. Johns, Kev Hewitt from Hinders dropped onto B-1 for his last few hours and landed three fish up to 25lb. |

Chris Standen landed 29 carp up to 25lb during a five night session with two of his mate, between the three of them they landed 63 fish! For the last couple of years we have provided swims for "Fishability UK" who provide fishing experiences for ex-forces personnel who are receiving physical or psychological rehabilitation. Again this year they were on B-2 and the lake didn’t disappoint with two of the lads setting new PB's; John Hayman with a 23lb 08oz mirror and Stuart Taylor with a cracking 29lb 03oz mirror. See you again next year! Also on B-2 was Angela Moore who after landing three twenties to 27.04 on B-1 went on to land a stunning 35lb B-2 mirror. |

We are always getting asked about when’s the best time to show up to the fishery. Its hard to say for definite but we always seems to have a shift change of anglers on Sundays, Wednesday and Fridays, with Sunday afternoons arguably being the best time to arrive. Many anglers seem to think that all lakes are permanently full and you can never get a swim, this is far from the case. We can get exceptionally busy on weekends, especially on bank holidays but even then its very rare that we are completely full, in fact during the last two years we can only remember this happening once (the recent Easter Bank Holiday). Below are the number of swims on each lake that were free at roughly midday Sunday 22nd just gone. **Upcoming Lake Closures for Matches/Events** Swims 1-9 on Brasenose-Two will be closed for (Fishability UK) from 8pm Friday 27th June until Sunday afternoon. Brasenose-One and Brasenose-Two will both be closed from 9am on Friday 11th July for the UK Carp Cup semi-finals. Both lakes will reopen on Sunday afternoon at approximately 3-4pm. Oxlease Lake will be closed for tree work from 8am Monday 28th July until PM on Friday 1st August. Oxlease Lake will then be closed again from 6pm Sunday 3rd August for the start of the BYCAC Junior Championships. The lake will then remain closed until roughly 3-4pm on Sunday the 10th of August. Hunts Corner Lake will still be open during this period. Brasenose-One, Brasenose-Two and Hardwick/Smiths will be closed for the MNDA Pro-Am Charity Event (Fish with the Stars) from 6pm on Sunday 10th of August until approximately 3pm on Wednesday 13th of August. **Weed Cutting Lake Closures** The whole of Brasenose-One will be closed for weed cutting from 8am Monday 4th August until 5pm Thursday 7th August. On the Guys Syndicate we will be cutting from 8am Monday 18th August. The cutting will commence on Yeoman’s Lake and dependant on the amount of weed will take 2-3 days. The boat will then move to Gaunts lake, where again, dependant on the volume of weed the boat will cut for 2-3 days. Whilst the boat is out on the water, no fishing will be allowed on that particular lake. Weed Cutting The whole of Brasenose-One will be closed for weed cutting from 8am Monday 4th August until 5pm Thursday 7th August. On the Guys Syndicate we will be cutting from 8am Monday 18th August. The cutting will commence on Yeoman’s Lake and dependant on the amount of weed will take 2-3 days. The boat will then move to Gaunts lake, where again, dependant on the volume of weed the boat will cut for 2-3 days. On Unity Lake, Jason Woodward had four mirrors during a recent session they weighed 15.01, 20.14, 21.11 and 36.03 And after losing a couple, Gareth Cook had two fish up to 23lb. Whilst on Gaunts Lake Dale Glover had the big mirror known as the "Sergeant" at a very spawned out weight of 33lb 14oz using Xcel boilies. |

Lee landed four fish including two mirrors of 22.03 and 24.08. He was fishing with his friend Andy Stalker unfortunately lost five fish but did manage a nice 23lb 01oz mirror. And also on Hunts, Paul Shorter smashed his PB when he slipped the net under a very nice 31lb 06oz mirror caught using halibut pellets. |

Kev Hewitt from Hinders of Swindon had six fish up to 32lb 02oz during a day only session. Jon Gasher had a new UK PB in the shape of a stunning 36lb 10oz mirror, this was his first ever trip to the complex. Liam Hodges had 25 fish up to 26lb 08oz using West Country Baits LH1 boilies. John Banks from Vale Royal Angling Centre had three fish recently including 24lb 10oz and 27lb 01oz. |

Angling Trust & Canal & River Trust pilot PAIRS Canal Championship for 2014
The Angling Trust & Canal & River Trust are delighted to announce the date competitors can start to apply for the Pairs Canal Championship which will be held on the Shropshire Union Canal in the Soudley area on 14th September 2014.
Entry forms will be available to apply for this new event from 15th July – 15th August, available on the Angling Trust website at www.anglingtrust.net, or alternatively email; sandra.drew@anglingtrust.net or telephone Sandra Drew, Competitions & Events Manager, Angling Trust on 0115 9061 301.. Please note: Entries will only be accepted by postal applications.
This Championship is open to anyone 17 years and above with an entry fee of £40.00 per pair, with optional pools available on the day of £10 per angler. This year to support the pilot of the Championship it is not necessary to have individual membership of the Angling Trust, or to be a Friend of Canal & River Trust.
This Championship will also carry a prize pot for the top three pairs of; 1st pair £1,250, 2nd pair £750, 3rd pair £500 (Subject to entries and sponsorship).
As well as the Pairs Championship there will also be an open junior section run in conjunction with the main event on the same day at Market Drayton on the Shropshire Union Canal open to anyone aged 12 – 16 years of age on the day of the match. This event will be free to enter, and all junior competitors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Entry forms will be available for this event via the Angling Trust at; www.anglingtrust.net or alternatively email; sandra.drew@anglingtrust.net or telephone Angling Trust on 0115 9061 301. The deadline for Junior entries is 15th August.

Championship glory for Drennan Team England at the European Championship
Team England proved to the world they are the best of the best when it comes to coarse angling by taking the World Championship winners title by storm to bring home team gold in the FIPSed 20th European Championship.
Drennan Team England consisted of; Will Raison, Sean Ashby, Alan Scotthorne, Callum Dicks, Lee Kerry, Simon Willsmore, Mark Downes and Mark Addy (Joint Managers).
The European Championship was held on 28th and 29th June on the Hensies Pommeroeul Canal, Bernissart, Belgium with 24 nations competing. England knew they had to get things right from the start if they were going to be contenders for the medals this year which needed them to locate the bream early on.
Mark Downes and Mark Addy (Joint Managers) stated “It was an extremely difficult venue where the difference was sheer concentration and patience that saw England "steal" the gold medal at the 24th hour in the World Championship. After a reasonable 1st day on 5th with 35 points, England knew they needed a low 20 points to have a chance of scooping their 5th European Title. With 15 minutes to go it was Will Raison who hooked and landed a 4 lb bream, his only fish apart from 4 small perch, followed by Sean Ashby doing exactly the same, a 3 lb bream to go with his single perch. Both finished 3rd in their sections joined by Callum Dicks 3rd , Alan Scotthorne 6th and Simon Willsmore 8th for 23 points, totalling 59 over the 2 days.”
“The team have worked brilliantly this week and we are all over the moon to win the Championship and bring home gold.”
In runners up position was Russia who put in another outstanding performance and only one point behind England to take silver, with Italy taking bronze. England were out of contention in the individual medal states with Mike Thinnes from Luxembourg taking the gold medal win, Diego Da Silva from France in silver medal position and Roman Pokorny Jr from the Czech Republic in third to take bronze.
